João Santa Maria is an activist in the field of drug, HIV, and viral hepatitis, and he serves as the Peer Coordinator of the harm reduction service GAT – In-Mouraria.
He used cocaine and injected heroin for 13 years. Currently, he advocates for the legalization of recreational cannabis for adults, the introduction of medical cannabis in Portugal, and innovative substitution therapies.
He also supports the establishment of safe drug consumption spaces with reduced risks and enhanced dignity, as well as the distribution of prevention and harm reduction materials, in addition to the basic kit provided through the needle exchange program (PTS).
Currently, he serves as a community representative for PTS at the Directorate-General of Health. He is a member of the negotiation group at DICAD (Division of Intervention in Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies) for the implementation of a new crack pipe.
Lastly, he advocates for the recognition of peer work and their status by the State, as well as the creation of working conditions and financial support similar to other professions.
