Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was born in Lisbon on December 12, 1948. He is a Catholic and has 2 children and 5 grandchildren.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and earned a Ph.D. in Juridical-Political Sciences in 1984.
He was a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and taught at various higher education institutions in Portugal and abroad throughout his career.
He also worked as a journalist, serving as the editor of the newspaper Expresso from 1980 to 1983 and contributing to the newspaper Semanário from 1983 to 1987. Subsequently, he became a political commentator in the media, first on the radio at TSF and later on television at RTP and TVI.
Marcelo has collaborated with several civic and social organizations and institutions, either as a founder, patron, leader, or simply as a volunteer. He served as a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1976 and was part of the VIII Constitutional Government as Secretary of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and later as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
He was a member of the PSD (Social Democratic Party) since its founding and served as its president from 1996 to 1999, playing a decisive role in ensuring government stability as the opposition leader.
On the international stage, he promoted the PSD’s membership in the European People’s Party and held the position of Vice President.
Marcelo held various positions in local government, including Municipal Deputy, Metropolitan Deputy, City Councilor, and President of the Municipal Assembly in the municipalities of Cascais, Lisbon and Celorico de Basto.
He was first elected as President of the Republic on January 24, 2016, taking office on March 9. He was reelected for a second term on January 24, 2021, and took office on March 9 of the same year.
