PORTUGAL
Maria João Ruela was born in 1969 in the district of Aveiro. She holds a degree in Social Communication from NOVA University Lisbon (1991) and a PhD in Social Sustainability and Development from Universidade Aberta (2023).
She worked as a journalist for 23 years at SIC – Sociedade Independente de Comunicação, where she served as a reporter, special correspondent, news anchor, executive editor, and news coordinator between 1992 and 2016, when she joined the Civil House of the President of the Republic. She is currently an advisor for social affairs, society, and Portuguese communities at the Presidency of the Republic, following the areas of social affairs and solidarity, health, labour (trade unions and social dialogue), equality and human rights, and Portuguese communities abroad.
In parallel, she is also a member of the General Council of the University of Aveiro, as a co-opted member.
